Here’s how:

1. Understanding Misdirection and Attention Management

  • Lesson: Magician’s excel in diverting attention to create illusions. They use misdirection to make audiences focus on one thing while something else happens.
  • Application: In social engineering, attackers may use misdirection to exploit vulnerabilities. By understanding these tactics, you can become more aware of where your attention should be and avoid falling for deceptive schemes. Always scrutinize unexpected requests or offers carefully and verify their authenticity.

2. The Importance of Scrutiny and Verification

  • Lesson: Magicians use careful planning and attention to detail to ensure that their tricks are flawless.

3. Psychological Manipulation Awareness

  • Lesson: Grifters often use psychological techniques to influence their mark’s perceptions and decisions.

4. Planning and Anticipating Moves

  • Lesson: Successful magic routines require meticulous planning and the anticipation of audience reactions.
  • Application: In business and personal security, anticipate potential threats and plan responses accordingly. Regularly review and update security measures, and consider potential vulnerabilities that could be exploited.

5. Building and Maintaining Security Protocols

  • Application: Implement and regularly update security protocols and practices to protect against social engineering attacks. This includes training employees on security awareness, using strong authentication methods, and maintaining up-to-date security software.

6. The Power of Confidence and Composure

  • Lesson: Magicians maintain confidence and composure to enhance the illusion and control the audience’s perception.
  • Application: In high-pressure situations or when dealing with social engineering attempts, staying calm and composed helps you make rational decisions. Avoid reacting impulsively or making hasty decisions when confronted with potential threats.

7. The Value of Discretion

  • Lesson: Magicians are skilled in keeping the secrets of their tricks to preserve the illusion…and grifters…to protect themselves.
  • Application: Be cautious about sharing sensitive information or discussing security measures openly, as this could provide clues for potential attackers. Maintain discretion and limit the dissemination of confidential details.

8. Training and Practice

  • Lesson: Magicians and grifters both spend significant time practicing and refining their skills to perfect their craft - ethical or otherwise.
  • Application: Regular training and practice are essential in preparing for and defending against social engineering attacks. Engage in ongoing security training, simulations, and drills to stay vigilant and responsive to potential threats.

9. Awareness of Deceptive Tactics

Brief hISTORY

Hello! Thanks for stopping by!

In 2001, I joined the Air Force as an AC-130 mechanic (Crew Chief), and served as aero repair and crash recovery. Then in 2010 I changed careers to mental health, still a federal employee, and now I work alongside the legal system helping veterans with legal challenges access the care they need, hopefully, as an alternative to long-term incarceration.

Over the years, between my entertainment pursuits and employment, I gained a lot of experience meeting with, interacting with, and making friends with all sort of wonderful people and unique characters.

Some were more professional and refined, others were more wayward and rebellious.

Rarely do grifters, pickpockets, and magicians like to share their secrets, but when they do, and you can see in their eyes the thrill it gives them to talk about and demonstrate what they mastered in their life. Which also often comes with fascinating stories.

These individuals live in a world full of secrets and unique characters that most of us will never get to meet without the risk of being conned at the same time.

My education, professional and personal life experiences taught me how to mingle with many different crowds and types of people, both formally and informally, professionally and non-professionally, what to pay attention to, what to watch out for, and how to protect yourself.

This also includes my knowledge about criminal thinking, working with mental health, recognizing dangerous mental health, situational awareness, property protection, manipulation, and so on.

I hold a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and master’s degrees in both clinical social work and forensic psychology.

Entertainment and speaking allows me to combine all my education and experiences in unique and fun ways to share my knowledge and experiences with others. But, it also allows me inside knowledge on how professional criminals and their thinking works.

Plus, everyday, I get to test that knowledge repeatably on new unsuspecting participants - from an ethical and entertainment approach of course.

These skills require an expert level of knowledge in sleight of hand, psychology, deception, and situation management.

This means being able to rapidly build rapport in any given moment, maintaining control as long as needed, and using attention and deception to lead the moment in the intended direction.

Magicians, grifters (con artists), and pickpockets draw skills from one another………each field an art in its own right.

These skills can also be applied ethically to business, such as lead generation, sales and negotiation, and the importance of strategic planning and practice. If you looking for a new and interesting way to present information to your team……..this is a cool way to demonstrate the tools in action!

I hold a lot of experience in a lot of different areas and always enjoy sharing what I know with other professionals.

When you hire me to speak, you are hiring a speaker that will provide subject-matter expertise and real world experience, and entertainment. I offer speeches and trainings that uses a combination of my education, professional and personal experiences, knowledge and skills on deception, sleight of hand, street crimes, pickpocketing, and social engineering.
